A potential method for CO2 sequestration is mineral carbonation. The mineral serpentine, Mg3Si2O5(OH)4, is used to store CO2 in the form of MgCO3. Here, the promotion of this process by the electrolysis of NaCl was investigated. The electrolysis was carried out in an electrolytic cell divided by a salt bridge using graphite electrodes. An acidic soln. is produced at the anode and a basic soln. at the cathode. Serpentine from the Hubei province in Red-China is dissolved in the acidic soln., and a mixt. of N2/CO2, resembling flue gas, is passed through the alk. soln. At T = 358 K, the dissolved Mg2+ ions react with the adsorbed CO2 to form Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2.4H2O. The solns. were analyzed by ICP-AES, and the solid products were characterized by TGA and XRD. The capture and fixation of CO2 takes place at low temp. and pressure, and the simultaneous evolution of H2 and Cl2 makes the process economical. |
