王中林教授于1982年毕业于西安电子科技大学,并于同年考取中美联合招收的物理研究生(CUSPEA),1987年获亚利桑那州立大学物理学博士学位,现任美国佐治亚理工学院纳米科学和技术中心主任,是国内外著名的纳米技术专家。王中林教授已在国际一流刊物上发表期刊论文400余篇,会议论文140余篇,拥有专利8项,出版4本专著和15本编辑书籍。王中林教授因其对“纳米技术领域的材料科学以及基础发展做出的杰出及持续的贡献”,2002年当选为欧洲科学院院士,2004年当选为世界创新基金会院士,2005年当选为美国物理学会院士。王中林教授是从1992年到2002年10年中纳米科技论文被引用次数世界个人排名前25位作者之一。

佐治亚理工学院王中林
来美国工作后,听到最多印象最深的学者名字就属王中林了。每每听到的还满是钦佩和骄傲,这等声望真让我着实吃了一惊。打开王中林的简历,单是看各种国内学术头衔,已经让人肃然起敬了:中国科学院海外评审专家、国家自然科学基金委海外评委、教育部“长江学者奖励计划”特聘讲座教授、北京大学客座教授、北京科技大学客座教授等等,厚厚的一沓论文及书目清单更能让人感觉到其厚重的科学涵养和科研实力。与王中林第一次见面是在2001年春寒料峭的亚特兰大,高高的个子,眼镜下目光炯炯,宏亮豪爽的笑声,不仅年龄比 想象中年轻得多,而且举手投足都能让人感到蓬勃的朝气。随着日后工作交往增多,私交渐密,才发现王中林的魅力不只是他的科研成就,更有其常人少有的真诚、谦和与质朴。
  王中林很忙,以他每年在世界各地做的学术报告超过40-50次,就可以想象时间对于他的意义。与他联系的最佳方式是发EMAIL,电话永远是录音。虽说如此,我还是乐意去“打扰他”,打电话或者干脆到亚特兰大出差时去他办公室坐坐,毕竟很难找到这么一位良师益友,能让你学习和领悟很多东西,无论是科学还是人生。
  凤凰
  王中林是陕西蒲城飞出的一只“金凤凰”,也是经历过重重劫狱的“火凤凰”。20世纪70年代的蒲城,和中国大部分地区一样,封闭落后。那时的学习不称为学习,而是学工和学农,学物理是为了维修拖拉机,学化学是为了了解农药,学数学是为了丈量土地。王中林的初中和高中就是在这种大背景下度过的,三分之一的时间都在田里泡着。1977年的夏天,恢复高考的消息传来,给从小就志怀高远的他带来了新的希望。9月份开始准备,从初中数、理、化开始,他凭着自己惊人的毅力和决心硬是啃了下去,终于如愿以偿地在1978年的夏天收到了西北电讯工程学院的录取通知书。
  王中林最初的志愿是学习雷达、计算机,可阴差阳错,因为物理成绩好,学校把他分到了物理专业。进入大学校门的第一天,他就暗暗给自己定下一条标准,本科每门课程不能低于90分。对于一个初中和高中基础并不好的青年来说,要达到如此的标准该付出多大的努力啊,王中林自己已经记不清有多少个周末和夜晚是陪着书本度过的。在西安读书的四年时间里,除了能找到书店外,其他的地方对他来说是陌生的。“机会是均等的,只留给有准备的人”,1982年,还在大学三年级的王中林迎来了人生又一个重要的转折,1981年西北电讯工程学院得到了三个CUSPEA(中国物理学生赴美留学考试)的参加考试的名额,王中林参加了考试,但因为英语成绩不够,没有通过。为了把英语学好,他买来录音机补习英语,第二年一举通过了考试,成为当年西北五省唯一被CUSPEA录取的学生。
  当时的内地消息闭塞,对美国高校一无所知,选择美国学校又成了一个难题。于是王中林便以字母顺序选择了以A开头的亚利桑那州立大学(ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY),没想到机缘巧合,歪打正着竟然投在国际知名的显微分析学家,英国皇家学会会员,高分辨电子显微学奠基人J.W.Cowley教授的门下。王中林的勤奋好学与刻苦努力很快得到了Cowley教授的赏识,每次教授早晨布置的任务,下午他就抢着做好给教授送过去。Cowley教授对他的评语是:不管做什么,都是做得最好的。Cowley教授严谨的治学精神和谦虚温和的处事风格也深深影响了王中林日后的成长,对推动他在科学征途上的进步起到了非常重要的作用。1987年7月,王中林用了4年时间拿到了一般需要5至8年的物理学博士学位,是该系有史以来第一人。他用四年时间做了三个方面的研究:一是用显微学和谱仪学结合的方法来分析纳米颗粒的结构和表面反应;二是提出了反射电子能量损失谱表面分析的理论和方法,第三是研究电子和表面的相互作用。Cowley教授对他的评价是:这三个方面的任何一个课题都可以作为一篇合格的博士论文。
  博士毕业后,王中林先后在纽约州立大学石溪分校、英国剑桥大学开文迪许实验室、美国橡树岭国家实验室和美国国家标准和技术定量局从事过研究工作。1992在石溪分校做博士后期间,31岁的王中林开始写自己的第一本专著,他用了两年多的时间完成了《电子衍射中的弹性和非弹性散射》,1995年纽约知名的Plenum Press出版后,被《American Scientists》杂志评论为“具有卓越成就和极其价值的经典之作”。此后,他在英国剑桥大学继续进行非弹性反射的研究,并发表了20多篇有影响的论文,对非弹性反射理论的发展作出了贡献,并开始在此领域占领了一席之地。
  明星
  佐治亚理工学院是美国南部著名的理工学院,其工程学院在全美排名第四,享有盛名。1995年王中林被佐治亚理工学院材料科学与工程学系聘为副教授和电子显微镜实验室主任,开始从事纳米科学的研究,也开始了他在科学人生中一个硕果累累的季节。该校科研主管副校长Charles Liotta称王中林是教授里的“明星”,是对他自受聘该校以来毫不过分的评价。
  1996年,王中林在纳米领域的第一篇文章在《Adv. Materials》杂志上一经发表,便引起了该领域的关注,至今该文章被引用次数超过210次。同年,他的第二本专著《Reflection Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy for Surface Analysis》由剑桥大学出版社出版,被英国Analysis和美国材料学会会刊评论为“反射电子显微学唯一的和必读的教材”。1998年王中林和同事在《Science》上发表了关于发现纳米碳管量子导电效应的文章,被12家专业学会会刊和报社作为重大科技发现转载。1999年,王中林率领的科研小组研制出可称单个病毒质量的“纳米秤”,被称为“世界上最小的秤”,这个秤利用单根纳米碳管的弹性和电磁共振作用来称重,可以称质量为亿亿分之二百克的单个病毒,该成果在《Science》发表后,立即引起世界上一些主要媒体的极大关注,这一重大发明被称为是对生物学和医学研究的重要贡献。1999年年底,王中林向学校提出成立纳米科学和技术中心的建议,学校采纳了这一建议并任命王中林担任中心主任。
  1999年3月,王中林被佐治亚理工学院提前晋升为正教授,成为该校有史以来第三位提前晋升的正教授。
  2000年,王中林又提出用半导体氧化物合成纳米材料,经过一年多的努力,他与同事们利用高温固体气相法,在世界上首次成功地利用金属氧化物合成了10-15纳米厚、30-300纳米宽的带状结构,俗称“纳米带”。纳米带具有很好的导电性和敏感性,而且制作成本不高,在纳米极传感和敏感器以及光电器件的制作方面有很好的应用前景。其发现与合成是继1991年发现多壁碳纳米管和1993年合成单壁碳纳米管以来纳米材料合成领域的又一重大突破,引起了国际纳米科技界的极大关注,被评为美国本周的重大科技新闻,美国的《Science News》、《USA Today》和其它几家主要科技杂志抢先报道这一重大发现。美国著名的《Science》刊登了这一文章并评论说“该文章报道了振奋人心的纳米材料,从来没在科学文献中看到过这种材料”。
  王中林已经成为佐治亚理工学院名符其实的明星,他不仅科研成就杰出,而且教授的课程非常受学生欢迎。在该校2001年十大杰出人物排名中,王中林排名第四。
  近日从亚特兰大又传来好消息,王中林教授因其对“纳米技术领域的材料科学以及基础发展做出的杰出及持续的贡献”,于不久前当选欧洲科学院院士。欧洲科学院已拥有350位院士,他们均在自己的科学领域做出了杰出贡献,其中包括多位诺贝尔奖得主。
  赤子
  在王中林的人生辞典中,科学家的一生分三个阶段,第一阶段是学习期,第二阶段是成就期,第三阶段是贡献期。而他认为自己正处在第二阶段,正开始第三阶段对社会对人类的回报。
  王中林是位国际知名的科学家,在中美科技界都享有很高的声誉。同时,他也是一位中美科技交流的友好使者,为促进两国科技界的交往和合作做了大量工作。王中林深知,美国和中国都和自己有着不可割断的联系,美国为自己的成功提供了先进的教育和优越的条件,中国是自己的祖国,培养了自己坚实的理论基础和不屈不挠的品格。他希望中美两个大国加强理解和合作,世代友好,促进世界和平。友好是建立在交流的基础上,作为科学家,只有通过促进人类的科技交流,才能将自己的成就反馈给社会。
  王中林每年都要回中国进行科技交流或应邀作学术报告,多次组织了中美高科技学术会议,被国内多家部门聘为教授或顾问。至今,他被聘为中国科学院首批海外评审专家和国家自然基金委海外评委,还是教育部清华大学“长江学者奖励计划”特聘讲座教授,北京大学、中国科技大学、中国科学院物理所、华南师范大学客座教授,华南理工大学、哈尔滨工业大学、西安电子科技大学、北京科技大学兼职教授,还担任过国内多家科技期刊,如国家自然科学基金委主办期刊《自然科学进展》和中科院《科学通报》等的编委。曾多次作为教育部“春晖计划”、“聘请世界著名学者项目”的邀请,回国讲学访问。
  王中林是个很实在的人,每次回国讲学他都希望能踏踏实实做些事情,不喜欢讲排场、讲形式,他很反感那些回国一路吃吃喝喝,热衷领导接见类的回国学者。目前他又有两项新的计划,一是利用两年时间专门为国内写一本介绍纳米科技的英文本科教材,另外是在今年组织几个著名海外学者到西部去为中小学生进行科普。他说,科技兴国的策略不仅要抓住大学生,还要抓娃娃。除了让国内科技界能把握世界最新科技动态外,还要调动孩子们对科学的兴趣。如果国外物理、化学、生物、自然等领域的知名学者能够回国用最简单的语言给孩子们讲述最尖端的科技知识,将是最有意义的事情。
  男人
  生活中的王中林是位至情至性的男人,在他的办公室里,除了满屋子的书外,最显眼的地方挂着的都是爱妻和爱女的照片。每当说起自己的家庭,王中林总无法掩饰满面甜蜜的笑容。妻子为了支持他的工作,毫无怨言地在家照顾三个孩子,最小的才刚刚两岁,正是累人的时候。想起这些,总让王中林心里感到十分愧疚。每天从学校回家,他二话不说,捋起袖子便抢着干活,拖地洗碗、整理花园,他知道妻子十分不易,自己只有拼命利用在家的时候多替她分担一些。
  在孩子眼中,王中林是位很忙很忙,但是也很可爱的父亲。虽然间暇时间很少,但是他总抽机会陪孩子们,一到假期,还带着全家出去度假。王中林还是位让孩子们骄傲的科学家。有一次,王中林的工作在亚特兰大当地的报纸上刊登了,女儿的老师拿着报纸夸她有个好爸爸。女儿自豪得不得了,从此以后,女儿便改名叫王中林“纳米爸爸”,在父亲节的时候,给爸爸写张卡片说他是“纳米宇宙中最伟大的纳米爸爸”。让王中林激动不已的是孩子不仅没有责怪自己,还能十分理解他。
  王中林非常懂得生活,他知道如何利用自己的最佳状态,每天起床后,跑步打球洗澡,清清爽爽地开车去学校,精神抖擞。累了就放下工作休息,等情绪好了,再进实验室。
  刚过不惑之年的王中林非常珍惜时间,但是也知道享受人生,科学是他的梦想,但并非他的全部,他认为一个真正的科学家应该知道如何把人生与科学更和谐地交融,也许这就是他科学人生中的人生科学吧

王中林博士于2000年9月创建了佐治亚理工学院的纳米科学和技术中心并担任该中心主任。王教授已在国际一流刊物上发表了400篇论文﹐45篇综述和书章节文章﹐140篇会议论文﹐8项专利,4本专著和10本编辑书籍。他已被邀请做过300多次学术讲演和大会特邀报告。他的学术论文已被引用6000次以上。他成功地组织和担任过7次学术会议的主席。王教授荣获了美国显微镜学会1999年巴顿奖章﹐佐治亚理工学院2000年杰出研究奖﹐2001年S.T.Li奖金(美化学学会)﹐美国自然科学基金会CAREER基金﹐中国首批国家自然科学基金会海外优秀青年科学家基金,中国科学院海外杰出学者基金获得者,中国科学院海外专家顾问团成员和国家自然基金委海外评委,国家自然科学进步奖评委。他是国家纳米科学中心海外主任,教育部清华大学“长江”特聘讲座教授。他是科学院化学所名誉教授, 中山大学名誉教授,北京大学客座教授﹐北京大学筹建工学院专家小组成员,浙江大学客座教授﹐华南理工大学客座教授,哈尔傧工业大学客座教授,厦门大学客座教授,中国科学院国际量子中心海外中心成员﹐北京科技大学客座教授,以及10多种期刊和杂志的编委和编辑。王中林博士被多次邀请参加国内科学和技术发展方向及领域研讨和评审会。王教授因其对“纳米技术领域的材料科学以及基础发展做出的杰出及持续的贡献”,2002年新当选为欧洲科学院院士(European Academy of Scienecs, www.eurasc.org ),2004年当选为世界创新基金会院士(World Innovation Foundation, www.thewif.org.uk)。法国居里夫人大学和法国联合大学(L'Institut Universitaire de France (IUF))于2003年5月7日,以王教授个人的名誉举行了专题纳米科技研讨会(a symposium in the honor of Prof. Wang)。王教授是从1992到2002十年中纳米科技论文引用次数世界个人排名前25位作者之一. Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) 2003年发表的世界纳米科技论进展总评中作为两个重点报道之一报道了王教授纳米带的研究进展。2004年《科学》(Science 304 (2004) 1282)把王教授作为在美国任教的外国人成功的典型进行了专访和报道。目前,王教授正在大力推行北京大学-佐治亚理工学院联合工学院的办学和组建,他是佐治亚理工学院和北京大学联合办学的美方在北京的执行主任。王中林博士是国内外知名学者。他的第一本专著《Elastic and Inelastic Scattering in Electron Diffraction and Imaging》(Plenum Press, New York, 1995)被American Scientists评论为“具有卓越成就和极其价值的经典之作”。他1996年由剑桥大学出版社发行的《Reflection Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy for Surface Analysis》被英国 Analysis杂志和美国材料学会会刊评论为“反射电子显微学唯一的和必读教材”。他1998年和康振川博士合着的《Functional and Smart Materials》被 Science 和 Physics Today 评论为“有关智能材料唯一的和最前沿的书籍”。他主编的《Handbook of Nanophase and Nanostructured Materials》已由清华大学出版社和美国Kluwer公司联合出版。王中林博士和他的同事1998年在Science上关于发现纳米碳管量子导电效应的文章被12 家专业学会会刊和报社作为重大科技发现转载。他们1999年的Science文章报道了世界上最小的可以称单个病毒 质量的“纳米秤”﹐已引起国际媒体的极大关注。他带领的小组在Science上报道了半导体氧化物纳米带结构的发现和合成﹐为纳米级传感和敏感器以及光电器件打下基础。这一最新成果引起了纳米界的巨大反响﹐被许多媒体 如USA Today, Science News, Nanotech Alert, Chemical and Engineering News等评论为纳米材料领域一重大突破。该文章是2002-2003年全世界化学界引用次数最多的论文。这一重大发现被德国的法兰富克报纸评论为可以和发现碳纳米管的意义可以比拟。他们最近研制的利用纳米带做成的应用于扫描探针技术中的纳米悬臂梁被《自 然》杂志以新闻登出(Nature, 423 (2003) 134)。
王教授领导的小组发明的低温无催化制氢技术被《Business Week》周刊在2003年6月30日作为近期可投资项目而醒目刊出。2004年,王中林领导的研究小组在世界上首次得到具有压电效应的半导体纳米环结构。这种新型纳米带可以应用于微/纳米机电系统,纳米级传感器, 生物细胞探测, 是实现纳米尺度上机电耦合的关键结构。这一重大研究成果发表在2月27日的美国《科学》周刊上。该研究成果是继王中林2001年首次发现半导体纳米带结构后又一重大原创突破性成果。他目前的研究主要集中在纳米材料﹐智能材料以及电子显微学的基础理论和新实验方法上。
