Instructions to Authors ---------------------------------------------- ---- Disk Submission Instructions Polymer Keyword Catalog 1. Manuscripts for publication that have not been published elsewhere, books for review, and all correspondence regarding papers prior to their acceptan ce should be sent to ONE of the Journal Editors: Dr. E. Baer, Dept. of Macro molecular Science, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH 44106; Dr. Anne Hiltner, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH 44106; Dr. B.W . Pengilly, 430 Delaware Avenue, Akron, OH 44303-1236; Dr. W. G. Perkins, 96 3 Hereford Drive, Akron, OH 44303; Dr. D. A. Schiraldi, KoSa, P.O. Box 5750, Spartanburg, SC 29304-5759; Dr. Mark A. Schubert, Energizer Battery Company , 25225 Detroit Road, Westlake, OH 44145; Dr. Robert A. Shick, BF Goodrich, 9921 Brecksville Road, Brecksville, OH 44141-3289. Reviewers: Authors are en couraged to suggest potential reviewers for the journal. Correspondence: All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 605 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10158. 2. The Editors desire to receive manuscripts based on original research in a ny phase of the chemistry or physics of large molecules which have a practic al applicability, including analysis and characterization of polymers. It is the preference of the Editors that papers be published in the English langu age. The author is responsible for the technical aspect of the manuscript, w hich could be obscured by faulty English. Note Manuscripts that are returned by authors six months after the request for revision from the Editor will b e considered as new submissions. 3. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (one original, two copies), typed double space throughout, on a heavy grade of paper, with margins of 2 .54 cm (1 in.). 4. Authors should supply up to five (5) keywords or phrases which best chara cterize the manuscript. To facilitate online searching, the editors of the W iley polymer journals have complied a common keyword catalog, available in t he first issue of every year and at http://www.interscience.wiley.com/jpages /0021-8995/keyword.pdf. At least three of the maximum of five keywords assig ned to an article must come from this list. 5. A short synopsis (maximum length 200 words) of the main contributions in the paper is required. This synopsis should be carefully prepared, for it is automatically the source of most abstracts. A short summary of the whole pa per, not the conclusions alone, should form the synopsis. 6. The paper should be reasonably subdivided into sections and, if necessary , subsections. Please refer to any issue of this journal for examples. 7. Authors are cautioned to type--wherever possible--all mathematical and ch emical symbols, equations, and formulas. If these must be hand-written, plea se write clearly and leave ample space above and below for printer's marks; please use only ink. All Greek or unusual symbols should be identified in th e margin the first time they are used. Please distinguish in the margins of the manuscript between capital and small letters of the alphabet wherever co nfusion may arise (e.g., k, K, ). Please underline with a wavy line all vect or quantities. Use fractional exponents to avoid root signs. The nomenclature sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Ch emistry is requested for chemical compounds. Chemical bonds should be correc tly placed, and double bonds clearly indicated. Valence is to be indicated b y superscript plus and minus signs. The use of SI units is preferred. 8. The references should be numbered consecutively in the order of their app earance and should be complete, including authors' initials and--for unpubli shed lectures or symposia--the title of the paper, the date, and the name of the sponsoring society. Please compile references on a separate sheet at th e end of the manuscript. Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to t he practices of Chemical Abstracts. Examples: O. Olabisi, L. M. Robeson, and M. T. Shaw, Polymer-Polymer Miscibility, Acad emic Press, New York, 1979. G. G. Guilbault, R. F. Chen, Govindjee, G. Papageorgiou, E. Rabinowitch, and E. L. Wehry, in Practical Fluorescence, G. G. Guilbault, Ed., Marcel Dekker , New York, 1973, Chap. 1. E. A. Hegazy, A. M. Dessouki, N. B. El-Assy, N. M. El-Sawy, and M. A. A. El- Ghaffar, J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 30, 1969 (1992). 9. Please supply numbers and titles for all tables. All table columns should have an explanatory heading. 10. All figures must be submitted (in duplicate) in a form suitable for repr oduction (camera ready). Good glossy photographs are required for halftone r eproductions. Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have bee n printed with a good quality laser printer. The maximum final size of figur es for this journal is 16.51 x 21.59 cm (6.5 x 8.5 in.) (after reduction). I f in doubt about the preparation of illustrations suitable for reproduction, please consult the publisher at the address given above in paragraph 1 and ask for a sample drawing. Poor quality artwork will lead to delay in publica tion. Color illustrations. All color figures will be reproduced in full color in t he online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requeste d to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encoura ged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essenti al scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors shoul d be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; plea se place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Ple ase contact Sheila Kaminsky at 212-850-6540/skaminsk@wiley.com for further i nformation. 11. Please supply legends for all figures and compile these on a separate sh eet. 12. Electronic Proofing In order to expedite the publication and on-line pos ting of articles in Wiley InterScience, the Journal of Applied Polymer Scien ce now offers electronic proofing. Corresponding authors with e-mail address es will be sent page proofs (and paperwork, such as reprint order forms) in pdf format via e-mail. Please follow the instructions in the e-mail; contact names and numbers are given for questions, problems, or if an author wishes to receive a paper proof. A fax cover form with the Production Editor’s inf ormation is also provided for authors to fax their corrections. 13. Reprints can be ordered and purchased by filling out the form attached t o the proof. This journal does not carry a page charge for contribution. 14. Copyright: No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed pu blication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to publisher. A publication agreement may be obtained from the editor or the pu blisher. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the j ournal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published pap ers will be vested in the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to ob tain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another p ublication. A copy of that agreement, executed and signed by the author, is now required with each manuscript submission. A manuscript cannot be accepte d for publication without the signed agreement. (If the article is a "work m ade for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.) Disk Submission Instructions Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy. The hard copy must match the disk. The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised versio n of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustratio ns) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for ma nuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity o f your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submiss ion slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s). Guidelines for Electronic Submission Text Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintos h format. Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts p repared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript wi th one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Pleas e make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off . Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or referenc e lists. File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macinto sh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention . Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processi ng program and version used. Illustrations All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device sh ould accompany all digital image submissions. Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, an d 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' reque st, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication. Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with p review) formats. Do not submit native application formats. Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color fi les at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be e nlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly. File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps). Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, forma ts, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany a ll files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Print and return with labeled diskette(s) Corresponding author's name: E-mail address: Telephone: Manuscript number: Type of computer: Program(s) & version(s) used: Miscellaneous: I certify that the material on the enclosed diskette(s) is identical in both word and content to the printed copy herewith enclosed.
