Cameron threatens to act against press over leaks

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the government does not rule out legal action against the British press for publishing classified data. Speaking in the House of Commons, he said that while it was better to appeal to newspapers’ sense of social responsibility, the future publication of security leaks could be met with injunctions. David Cameron, British Prime Minister, said, "The approach we’ve taken is to try and talk to the press and explain how damaging some of these things can be, and that is why the ’Guardian’ did actually destroy some of the information disks that they had, but now they have gone on and printed further material which is damaging. I don’t want to have to use injunctions or D notices or the other tougher measures; I think it is much better to appeal to newspapers’ sense of social responsibility." Cameron’s comments came in the wake of this year’s revelations in the UK’s Guardian newspaper by former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. He accused Snowden and unnamed newspapers of assisting Britain’s enemies by helping them avoid surveillance by its intelligence services, saying it was going to be harder to keep Britain safe as a result. The UK, unlike the US, has no First Amendment-like protection guaranteeing freedom of the press from official interference, and its Official Secrets Act punishes the unauthorised disclosure of classified material. However, successive British governments have generally relied on informal lobbying to keep sensitive national security stories out of the news, rather than legal action. |
