It can also be seen from the figure below that the change in contents of acid and alkali oxides in the coal sample is the direct cause to changed ash fusion point of the sample. The high melt point of alkali oxides result in very high ash fusion points for the coal samplle from Qipanjing and Queergou and this has little to do with the silica-alumina ratio. The ratio between content of acid respectively alkali oxides can be used to predict ash fusion point within a certain range. From the table it is observed that the silica-alumina ratio for Shanghaimiao coal sample is high and the total content of SiO2 and Al2O3 takes up more than 80% of the ash. Its alkali oxides content is the lowest of all three coal samples and is 8.5% of the total content. In the coal samples from Qipanjing and Queergou, however, the alkali oxides content is very high and the CaO content reaches 4.35% and 9.12% respectively. The melting point of CaO is as high as 2610℃, which is likely the reason why the coal sample has an excessively high ash fusion point.
