[交流] A leg-cutting operation by the patient himself

11:00 am, April 14, 2012. This time should be remembered by everybody. At this time, a leg-cutting operation began, it lasted 15 minutes. The doctor was the patient himself. Tools he used include a fruit knife, a hacksaw, and a towel around a yangyangnao, a stick-like thing used to suppress itching. Zheng Yanliang, the name of the patient, put the towel between his teeth, and began to cut his right leg with the hacksaw and the knife. He made it by himself in about 15 minutes. Then he called his wife to help him, she was in another room during the operation. This happened in Zheng's home in the rural area of Zangcun township, Qingyuan county, Hebei province, in northern China. Zheng suffered from arterisclerosis obliterans for about half a year before this leg-cutting operation. He went to see doctors, but found that he cannot afford the about 100,000 RMB yuan needed for this operation. He then went home, but his legs becoming worse and worse, aching, necrosis, festering,  in late March he even found some worms in the flesh. During these days, the aching made him yell often, even the neighbors can hear him. Just before the operation, because of the festering, he could see bones of his right leg. The useless leg made his movement difficult, Zheng told reporters later. So, he made a decision of cutting the leg by himself. He asked his wife to help him, but she thought he was crazy, and rejected to help him. He asked his wife to leave, and did it by himself. After it was done, he called his wife to help him. She went into the room where her husband stayed, and found he lost four teeth during the cutting. Because of the obliterans, Zheng did not lose much blood. His wife said, after the operation, his health condition was much better, he can eat more than before. Local government already offered some financial support to him. After the media reported this, a doctor in Shanghai said he and his colleague can offer free checkup for Zheng, but his condition is not suitable for an artificial leg.
