In the U.S., it is common for people to try to fix common household problems themselves. Large hardware stores can be easily found to sell people whatever supplies they may need. Most people, however, do not do a very good job, and have to call a professional. For large items with a warranty, it is fairly easy to get free service within the time of the warranty.
