Upon excitation into the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band, dppz complexes of Ru(II) are highly emissive when intercalated into DNA but show significant quenching when measured in aqueous buffer because of hydrogen bonding to the phenazine nitrogen atoms.
