Two types of sub-bottom profiler are manufactured. These are “chirp” and active (pulsed) continuous wave systems. Chirp sub-bottom profilers offer greater bottom penetration than continuous wave systems and are superior to seismic systems in terms of range resolution and reduced ensonification. For example, a chirp SBP mounted on an AUV can typically provide seafloor penetration of 5-100 metres, depending on bottom type, and a 10 cm range resolution while ensonifying an area less than 18 metres in diameter from an altitude of 50 metres. |
