I am really very much surprised, Doctor Johnson, she said. Whatever made you omit those important words? Ignorance, Madam, sheer ignorance, was the reply of the learned doctor. Nowadays, with our tremendously improved facilities for self - education, this disarming reply would not suffice. We have at our disposal thousands upon thousands of reference tools which even the leading scholars of Dr. Johnson's day lacked. And one of the simplest and most effective ways for you to guarantee that you will have the right word at your fingertips at the right time is to make a daily practice of using Hartrampfs VOCABULARY-BUILDER. You will find the method of using this book simplicity itself. Let us assume that you are a motion-picture critic faced with the need for describing the newest and brightest performance of Hollywood's leading comedienne. The picture itself may have elated, beguiled, or captivated you. And the sum total of your reaction to the film was a mood of enchantment, fascination, or even; enthr ailment. And all this, mind you, from looking in only one place, There is no need to search through hundreds of pages of a dictionary or similar reference book. Here in one place are all the synonyms and associative words you are ever likely to need. Should you find even these dozens of choices insufficient, you may wish to look up the other sections referred to in the index under entertain sections 48A, 1 14, 6114974 and 113* In almost every instance, however, you will find more variations than you can possibly use in the very first section you turn to. In brief, the best and simplest way to use Hartranipf's VOCABULARY BUILDER is this: 1. Find in the index at the back of the book the word for which you want a substitute. 2. Note the section number following the word. 3. Turn back to this section in the front part of the book. There you will find the right word to express your thought Here, then, is your new VOCABULARY-BUILDER.
