In addition to the anti-angiogenic mechanism of action of disrupting Dll4 in the tumor vasculature,direct effects on the frequency of tumor initiating cells (cancer stem cells) and tumor growth have been described for tumor cell-specific targeting of Dll4 alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

Fischer‘s interest in other heterocyclic molecules found in nature led to the first synthesis of caffeine,which is the stimulant in coffee and tea .The purine ring system found in caffeine also comprises the ring system of heterocyclic bases adenine and quanine that are found in nucleic acids. he also developed a general sysnthesis of indole,the heterocyclic ring-containing component in the amino acid trypophan,and the method is known today as the Fischer indole synthesis
  While Fischer must have taken satisfaction and joy from hin scientific accomplishments, his personal life ended in tragedy. before moving to berlin ,hemarried Agnes Gerlach with whom he had three sons . his wife died at the age of 33 , and two of his sons were killed in World War I. by the end of the war ,Fischer himself suffered from mercury and phenylhydrazine poisoning and advanced intestinal cancer .
