Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450; CYP) are a superfamily of hemecontaining enzymes which catalyze the molecular scission of the O--O bond of atmospheric dioxygen using reducing equivalents supplied by NADPH/NADH and channeled to the P450 heme Fe center almost always through ancillary redox partner proteins [1,2]. Generally, one atom is incorporated into the substrate molecule and the other oxygen atom is reduced to a water molecule (Scheme I). The array of oxidation reactions catalyzed by the P450 enzyme superfamily is unprecedented in biological chemistry. |
