In the case of Penicillium, the mechanism of manganese leaching was non-enzymatic because spent medium from a culture of the organism prepared in dilute seawater was very active in leaching manganese (Table 5). Since the manganese in Hardshell ore is reported to be mostly in the oxidized form, the active agent(s) in the spent medium must be able to reduce the manganese chemically to solubilize it. Penicillium is not likely to reduce MnO 2 enzymatically as a form of respiration as some bacteria do, because its respiratory enzyme system is located in mitochondria and not in the plasma membrane as in bacteria. A periplasm/plasma membrane location for the respiratory system appears essential for attack of insoluble minerals such as manganese oxides (see discussion by Ehrlich, 1981).生物冶金浸出银锰矿的! |
