There is a debate here, on what the government should do, more wellfare with higher taxes or the opposite. Obama prefers to the former.

Actually, at present, the hostpital totally relies on the expense of the patients, so the cost in a hospital is very high. One of my friends stayed two days in hospital to give birth to her daughter, the total cost is $10,000. She paid 20% of the cost, her insurance company paid the rest.
