A gel entrapped base catalyst (GEBC) with the following composition: water 60%:NaOH 10%:agar agar 30%, is a solid substance which can be cut into pieces and used in non-aqueous solvents as a heterogeneous base. Using this catalyst, one can achieve cyanoethylation of different monohydric primary alcohols devoid of any steric hindrances with high yields of the products. The same catalyst can be used for different alcohols. The diffusion of NaOH depends on the nature of the solvent; hence, the catalyst can be reused using an appropriate solvent. |
