The study aimed to investigate the physiological toxicity effect of heavy metal copper on celery seedlings and its alleviation by silicon treatment. Celery seedlings were treated with CuSO4 at various concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 mg/L) and measured for their growth, photosynthetic parameters and antioxidant activities. Na2SiO3 solutions in the same concentration range (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 mg/L) were applied on the CuSO4-treated seedlings to verify the alleviation effects of silicon. As a result, the growth retardation of celery seedlings was enhanced and biological yield was reduced with the increase of copper concentration. The content of chlorophyll a and b were significantly lower than that of control. The highest enzymatic activity of SOD and POD was found in seedlings treated with 60 mg/L CuSO4. Meanwhile, the best detoxification effect was exerted by 40 mg/L Na2SiO3. In conclusion, high concentration of CuSO4 inhibited the growth of celery seedlings and compromised their photosynthetic machinery. Celery seedlings showed some physiological response to CuSO4 treatment and silicon treatment at proper concentration might alleviate the harmful effect of copper. |
