When I was first abroad to Sydney, Australia, my English was not good enough. And to improve my English, I tried all my best to talk and gossip with anybody who could talk with me. One day, when I was waiting for a bus to my University at a bus station in Burwood, I started to talk with an old blonde lady with my clumsy English. Maybe the old lady also felt lonely, she was happy to have some conversion with me. she asked about my background, and I tried to tell her why I came to Australia; and she talked about her recent trip to Beijing, Chinaa, and I gave her more information about Beijing since I lived in Beijing for several years. With the conversion between us deeper and deeper, we all had very good impression on each other. During conversion, I asked her if she could really understood my English. She gave a remarkable answer which I will never forget. She said:" yeah, I can understand your English though occasioanly you have some specific strange pronounciation and misusing words and grammers. Just try to keep talking like this, you will imporve your English. And when you can master English like a native speaker, I mean if you can understand anybody's English, whether he is from China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, India, or Germany, Italy whatever, then it means that your English is OK.". And before we departed, she gave me her phone number and said that she would like to ask the church community to help foreign people like me to improve English. Starting from a few weeks later after our coincident conversation in the Bus station, I called up some other Chiense, Korean, Indonesian and Japanese guys who were also poor in English, to particiapte in an English Study Class organized by the Church community every weekend. Of course, that old day was the sponsor. The classs was totally free of any charge. And I really enjoyed to make friends and talk in English with those guys from different background in the next 4 years. Gradually I found that my English became better and better. Lesson: Environment and daily practice are important for language study. |

to have free conversation with native speakers, you improved. when you understand weird tones like those of Indians, you win. thank you for sharing ! your experience is of course very useful for those who are struggling to improve their oral English. i can not agree more with you that one needs keep practicing under real communication environment to gain language proficiency. probably it is the only way to be a master in any foreign language. the point is, for most students at home, how could they create such environment ? |
