摘要

Electronic and optoelectronic devices impact many areas of society, from
simple household appliances and multimedia systems to communications,
computing, and medical instruments. Given the demand for ever more
compact and powerful systems, there is growing interest in the
development of nanoscale devices that could enable new functions
and/or greatly enhanced performance. Semiconductor nanowires are
emerging as a powerful class of materials that, through controlled
growth and organization, are opening up substantial opportunities for
novel nanoscale photonic and electronic devices. We review the broad
array of nanowire building blocks available to researchers and discuss a
range of electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices, as well as integrated
device arrays, that could enable diverse and exciting applications in the
future.

The development of integrated electronic circuitry ranks among the most
disruptive and transformative technologies of the 20th century. Even
though integrated circuits are ubiquitous in modern life, both
fundamental and technical constraints will eventually test the limits of
Moore’s law. Nanowire photonic circuitry constructed from myriad onedimensional building blocks offers numerous opportunities for the
development of next-generation optical information processors and
spectroscopy. However, several challenges remain before the potential of
nanowire building blocks is fully realized. We cover recent advances in
nanowire synthesis, characterization, lasing, integration, and the
eventual application to relevant technical and scientific questions.

During the last half century, a dramatic downscaling of electronics has
taken place, a miniaturization that the industry expects to continue for
at least a decade. We present efforts to use the self-assembly of onedimensional
semiconductor nanowires1 in order to bring new, highperformance
nanowire devices as an add-on to mainstream Si
technology. The nanowire approach offers a coaxial gate-dielectricchannel
geometry that is ideal for further downscaling and electrostatic
control, as well as heterostructure-based devices on Si wafers.

The detection of biological and chemical species is
central to many areas of healthcare and the life
sciences, ranging from uncovering and diagnosing
disease to the discovery and screening of new drug
molecules. Hence, the development of new devices
that enable direct, sensitive, and rapid analysis of
these species could impact humankind in significant
ways. Devices based on nanowires are emerging as a
powerful and general class of ultrasensitive, electrical
sensors for the direct detection of biological and
chemical species.
