University of California Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEIN)  Research Associate/Postdoctoral Positions Available

Associate/Postdoctoral positions are available at the UCLA/National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanomaterials (CEIN) in the Environmental Decision Analysis (EDA) team focusing on the development of approaches and models to assess the potential environmental impact of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). In accomplishing the above, the EDA team integrates knowledge derived from high volume data generated from studies of ENMs toxicity, fate and transport and life-cycle analysis. The premise of the approach is that environmental impacts are governed by toxicity of and exposure to ENMs. The ultimate goal is to build an analysis platform for decision making regarding the safe design and use of ENMs.

The CEIN is a multidisciplinary center involving academic groups from Engineering, Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Public Health and Policy with partners abroad and from a number of the National Laboratories. The research work of the EDA team is physically located at both the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) as well as at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, both at UCLA.

The Research Associate/Postdoctoral fellows will work with the CEIN EDA team to develop advanced modeling platforms (implemented for cloud-based computing) for environmental impact assessment (EIA) of ENMs, as well as associated case studies. These efforts will involve: (a) the use of data mining/machine learning and various statistical methods for the analysis of voluminous ENM toxicity data, including the development of (Quantitative)-Structure-Activity-Relationships (QSARs) and various aggregation methods for hazard ranking/scoring from multi-parameter toxicity metrics,
(b) development of ENM emission estimates, (c) multimedia fate and transport modeling for assessment of potential exposure scenarios; (d) EIA framework development, and
(e) integration of the above information/models into an environmental decision analysis system.

The available research positions provide unique opportunities to be involved and contribute to a globally visible program that is forging a new research direction and paradigm shift geared to demonstrate the benefits of the linkages between engineering, mathematics, computer/computational science, biology, and environmental science. The positions will involve interactions with students, faculty, industrial affiliates of the program and international partners.

The qualifications for the positions are described below:
Education: Ph.D. in Chemical, Civil, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a field related to the areas of experience described below.
Experience: Development and working familiarity with exposure assessment, basic risk analysis, toxicity/dose-response modeling, life-cycle analysis, transport phenomena, and modeling of environmental fate and transport. Experience with basic toxicology, colloidal science and environmental chemistry would also be an asset. Experience with computer-based modeling is essential. Familiarity with scientific programming languages (MATLAB, R, C and FORTRAN), database use and linking (for modeling purposes) and basic user-interface design experience is desirable. Also, experience with bio-statistics, bioinformatics, decision-making models, data mining/machine learning, and artificial intelligence would be beneficial.

The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is an exceptional research institution in an attractive and comfortable campus located in West Los Angeles. The  appointment is for a period of 1-2 years, with the possibility for extension. The salary is competitive and includes a medical insurance program.
