CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Track on Healthcare Applications and Challenges of Body Area Networks (HACBAN)

Technically-sponsored by IEEE EMB and ACM SIGCHI
Proceedings to be published by ACM

Body area networks (BANs) along with wearable healthcare monitoring and computing have received significant attention and interest from both researchers and practitioners. Substantial research outcomes on BANs have been achieved over the last decade. However, the process of transforming research into practices of real-life medical applications of BANs seems relatively slow due to numerous practical challenges. These challenges range from technological immaturity of wearable sensors and actuators, methodological difficulties of signal and data processing, ethical and data privacy issues, to the lack of a clear regulatory framework for e-health products and services. Identifying and addressing these challenges will bridge the gap between research of BANs and their medical and clinical applications, accelerate the process of transforming research into practice, and open up new ideas and areas of research to follow.

The purpose of this special session is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines to share, present, and to discuss recent experiences and advances in the healthcare applications of BANs. Regular papers, short papers, and posters submissions are welcome. Topics include, but are not limited to:

Hardware and software development and implementation of BANs
Solutions of e-healthcare for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery with BANs
Devices and algorithms for health information acquisition and processing with BANs
Devices and frameworks for transmission and sharing of electronic health records via BANs
Smart phone based healthcare monitoring, health promotion, and real time signal processing and biofeedback
Technologies for real-time vital signs monitoring and position location in extreme conditions and hazards with BANs and wearable systems
Technologies for mobile patient monitoring in hospitals with BANs
Technologies for remote patient monitoring out of hospitals with BANs
Methodologies for interaction between patients and health professionals through BANs
Practices of privacy protection in BANs
Practices to increase patient and user confidence in BANs



Paper submission deadline: June 1, 2013
Notification deadline: June 30, 2013
Camera ready deadline: July 31, 2013

Regular papers are limited to 7 pages, short papers to 4 pages and poster/demo papers to 1 page. Up to two extra pages are allowed for each paper with extra page charges. Papers must follow the ACM conference paper format. Please visit

for detailed submission instructions. The authors of regular and short papers will deliver oral presentations. The authors of poster/demo papers will deliver posters and/or system demonstrations.

All accepted paper will be published by ACM. Selected papers will be considered for publication in leading journals such as:

ACM/Springer Mobile Networks and Applications
Springer Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing
