| Very frequently, surfactant enhanced soil washing SESW pro-jects are carried out using model soils, i.e. pristine soils contami-nated artificially with metals. It happens also in works where the aim is the cleaning up of soils contaminated with organic compounds (oil fractions, pesticides, phenols, PCB¡®s, antibiotics, etc.The situation is more complicated in the case of the metals, since metals are natural soils components and they can be desorbed from soils, by changing the pH. In general, it is well known that metals are more free at low pH values, whilst at basic conditions metals are less ionized, and so, less available. |
