Nearly all the 66 antennas that make up the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) are now receiving data at the telescope site 5000 meters above sea level. The telescope, built at a cost of more than $1.3 billion, will help astronomers study the cold universe at wavelengths that fall between microwaves and infrared light. Observing in that part of the electromagnetic spectrum will enable researchers to gain new insights into the origins of stars, galaxies, and planets.
