Information on design and application of rubber components is an essential part of a general engineering education, along with the study of other materials, so that the new engineer can make intelligent design choices. Without this knowledge, the engineer will be dependent on the rubber manufacturer or supplier for product design and technical information. This book is intended to meet the need for such information. This second edition of Engineering with Rubber contains updated and revised textual material and many new problems that deal with specific issues and allow the reader to test their understanding of the materials. Questions are appended to nearly every chapter-this feature is especially useful for students and those new to the field.

This book deals with some basic principles on which successful use of rubber depends:
1. How is an elastomer chosen and a formulation developed?
2. Why is rubber highly elastic and relatively strong?
3. How can one estimate the stiffness, strength, and durability of rubber products?

These questions face any engineer who wishes to understand the principles of designing rubber components. This book is intended to teach beginning engineers the principles of rubber science and technology.

About the Author

Dr. Alan N. Gent holds a distinguished chair at The University of Akron, where his is the Dr. Harold A. Morton Professor of Polymer Physics and Polymer Engineering. He has been the recipient of a number of awards during his long career, including the NASA Public Service Medal in 1988; the George Stafford Whitby Award from the ACS Rubber Division in 1987; and the 3M Excellence in Adhesion Science Award from the Adhesion Society in 1987.

Gent has published over 180 scientific papers, book chapters, and review articles on rubber and plastics materials, and is a coholder of two British patents and one U.S. patent.

A particularly significant activity that Alan undertook in recent years was his service on the National Research Council’s panel, which provided oversight to the space-shuttle solid-rocket booster redesign after the disastrous Challenger explosion. Gent was awarded the NASA Public Service Medal for his contributions. Since the rocket booster problem focused on the rubber seals in the segmented case joint, it is particularly noteworthy that he was the only rubber scientist on the panel.

Dendrimers are presently one of the most intensely studied classes of compounds because of their unusual structure.They can be described as a jungle of entangled branches traversed by winding trails which lead to sweet fruits and bright blossoms. On these trails one can reach the thickets interior as well as find a way out. Expressed less lyrically, this thicket stands for regularly branched, densely packed structures, and the trails represent voids and channels not filled by bent back branches but by solvent. The fruit and blossoms are photochemically, electrochemically, or synthetically addressable units, catalytically active sites, etc., and the back and forth on the trails stands for transport processes.In a mathematical sense dendrimers are enveloped by an interface, which defines what is either in or out. This interface is shaped like a sphere if the trails are filled to bursting. Otherwise dendrimers are more flattened like amoeba, especially if in contact with a surface. The high density of the functional groups, the expansion of these compounds to a range of several nanometers, the existence of usable ªsurface º and transport possibilities in and with them have made dendrimers interesting candidates for many applications. This review describes how dendrimer construction and polymer synthesis were combined and used to move from fully or flattened spherical shapes to cylindrical ones. The shapeinducing influence of dendritic substituents
can be driven to create nanoobjects with a cylindrical shape, which not only considerably widens the range of applications for the dendrimer class but also opens up new perspectives for supramolecular and polymer chemistry. Because of the sheer size of the described objects and complexity of shape-related properties, research in this area must necessarily be interdisciplinary.
This article tries to mirror this by giving special attention not only to synthesis but also the characterization and behavior of these compounds in bulk and at interfaces. Furthermore,
potential application fields are described.
