Leiden Institute of Chemistry The Leiden Institute of Chemistry houses the research groups in Chemistry and Life Sciences. Our environment and quality of life is largely determined by chemistry, therefore research at the forefront of molecular and life sciences is of high importance for our future. The chemistry and life science research in the Leiden Institute of Chemistry is organized around two major themes: Health & Disease and Sustainable Energy. These themes illustrate the central position of chemistry and life sciences between biology, medicine and physics. The various research topics carried out within these themes are ideal for executing interdisciplinary research. The Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC), is looking for a: PhD student for an ERC granted project in targeted light-activatable anticancer metallodrugs (38 hours per week) Vacancy number: 13-027 The project is dealing with the synthesis and in vitro testing of light-activatable ruthenium-based anticancer metallodrugs for application in photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT). Tasks The researcher will synthesize and characterize light-sensitive ruthenium compounds and study their stability in the dark and their thermal- and photochemical ligand substitution properties. The dark toxicity and phototoxicity of the most promising complexes will be tested on selected human cancer cell lines and models for healthy cells. The chemical work will be performed within the MCBIM group, and the biology work will be realized in collaboration with biologists of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry. Undergraduate student supervision and teaching duties are also included. More details can be obtained by email. Requirements The candidates should hold a MSc??s degree in chemistry and have experience with inorganic synthesis. Experience with common characterization techniques (NMR, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, etc.) is a must; experience in cell testing, bioinorganic chemistry, or biochemistry, is a plus. The candidate should have an excellent grade list, and have a good spoken and written English level (TOEIC 6.5 or more, or niveau B2 or more according to the Common European Framework of Reference). Appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility. Ultimately the appointment must lead to a completion of a PhD thesis. During your appointment you will be supervised by dr. Sylvestre Bonnet, your promoter will be mrs. prof. dr. E. Bouwman. The gross monthly salary is set on ? 2.042,- in the first year up to ? 2.612,- in year four. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. All our PhD students are embedded in the Leiden University Graduate School of Science. Our graduate school offers several PhD training courses at three levels: professional courses, skills training and personal effectiveness.
