Happy New Year, my verbose talk.

The Chinese New Year is coming! The traditional Chinese New Year, is regarded the real new year in China, the Jan 1 is only a less important occasion. At present, there is a 7-day break for most institutions in China, but for Jan. 1, there is only one day. Many people work in cities, while their families, especially parents live in countryside; for many farmers, who work in cities, but the HUKOU, the official residences are still in countryside, so, most of them leave their children to their parents, and work in cities for whole years or most of a year in cities. So, the Chinese New Year seems the only chance for them to meet their parents and children. So, the phenomenon is, wherever you live, whatever you do, you will go to your home, or your parents' home before the last day of the lunar year.  Airplane, train (green car train, this is the cheapest and the slowest, bulletin train, high-speed train), long-distance bus, private can, and also motorcycle, are all possible ways to go home, people do this for a family gathering at the new year eve. So, most people will complain their spouses this way, he (seldom she) is too busy, he has not spent New Year Eve with us for many years!  So, the New Year Eve may be most important, some people will go to visit the tombs of their ancestors, to burn some paper (often in the shape of bills). On the second day, most people will go to visit neighbors, or invite friends to have dinner or lunch with them. On the third day after the New Year Eve, many people will go to visit their relatives. In my hometown, relatives of mother's side are the most important. For the newly-married couples, they will go to visit the bride's parents. So, at this time, family gathering seems ended.  Traditionally, the New Year will last about 15 days or more. Because many years ago, most people live on farming, during this cold season, a little can be done in fields. So, people try to relax. In my hometown, there is a kind of show called Shehuo, which is like the Beijing Opera, but without singing, it is mute. It is often played at night, with three very simple and loud instruments, drum, gong, cymbals. The actors are farmers. During nights about 10 days from the New Year Day, the Shehuo group will show from house to house, at each house, they will play about 10 minutes, to tell a story about tales or what happened many years ago. The actor wear clothes like those Beijing Opera, they dance (or something like dancing) to the rythms of the loud instruments. At every households, after the short show, the hosts will sever food to the actors and the audience. The audience will follow the actors from yard to yard.  Nowdays, many people will leave their parents early after the New Year, because their vacation is short, only 7 days. So, many tradition are changing. |
