The postdoc will have the opportunity to investigate atomic-scale structure and electronic properties in oxides and other functional complex materials, such as green energy materials and/or strongly correlated electron systems, by applying the state-of-the art scanning transmission electron microsope (STEM) and high voltage TEM. Particular focus will be on enlarging the existing microscopic techniques in charactering conventional but technologically important materials, and on new directions such as in situ observation and manipulationof defect behaviour in materials. Transmission electron microscopies provides the potential for profound insight into fundamental problems in condensed matter physics by seeing the materials even at the atomic scale. In particular, the scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with an abberration corrector offers an unprecendented opportunity to probe details of atomic strcture and electronic states with a sub-angstrom electron probe and thus allows for direct observation of individual atoms. Important scientific questions can be addressed by correlating structures to functional properties for the materials of matter on a quantum level. Note: This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based upon satisfactory job performance and on-going operational needs. Key Responsibilities: • Apply state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopes, with particular emphasis on HAADF and EELS analysis of materials. • Relate the structures to functional properties so as to understand origin of the long-standing problems in mateials or applied physics field. • Collaborate and work with other researchers, students, or interns. • Collect and analyze experimental data, prepare research publications, and communicate results at professional meetings.
