Unraveling the genetics of complex diseases can be enhanced by focusing on underlying risk factors. For example, studies on lipoproteins and blood pressure have been shown to correlate well with the risk of vascular disease. Insights into the pathogenesis of breast cancer may be informed in a similar way using MD because both may be determined by similar genetic variants. In fact, the number of genetic and environmental factors influencing an intermediate such as MD is likely smaller than that influencing the endpoint, namely breast cancer. Consequently, studies to identify genes for MD could be more powerful and efficient than those for breast cancer.

集中研究潜在的疾病风险因子,可以更好地揭示复杂疾病的遗传机理。譬如,研究已经表明脂蛋白和血压与血管疾病风险之间具有良好的相关性。类似地,可以利用MD来探析乳腺癌的发病机理,因为两者可能由相似的遗传变异决定。事实上,影响诸如MD之类的中期症状的遗传和环境因素,在数量上可能要少于影响终末期症状(即乳腺癌)的因素。因此,研究鉴定MD的基因,可能比研究乳腺癌基因更强大有效。
