On 7 January, the average highest daily temperature hit 40.33°C, beating the previous record of 40.17°C set in 1972. The first 2 weeks of January were “the hottest 13-day period in Australian history,” says the Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s David Jones. The extreme heat forced the bureau to top-up its color coded weather map to accommodate temperatures up to 54°C.
