conrad wu, brother-in -law of obama, born 1974. he is of malaysian Chinese descent, and his parents are from Kudat and Sandakan, two small towns in Sabah, malaysia. conrad and his younger brother, perry, were born and raised in Burlington, ontario. he married maya at the end of 2003 in hawaii. they have two daughters, suhaila and savita. conrad wu currently is a us citizen. he is an assistant professor at the university of hawaii's academy of creative media. he studied philosophy at McGill university and cultural studies at the university of Victoria before he got his PhD from Hawaii university at Manoa.

in an email interview with the star, conrad, 34, said that his father, howard, was born in sandakan and his mother, joan, in kudat.

"I have many relatives who live throughout malaysia, especially in kuala lumpur, kota kinabalu and the two towns where my parents came from," he said. his parents subsequently settled in canda and conrad was born there. conrad sai his parents return malaysia once every one to two years. " it remains an important place of origin to them, in addition to a large, extended family, they have many good friends in Malaysia. i try to visit malaysia every few years, it is a special country and feels familiar to me." said conrad.

obama visited Chicago's social services agency a few years ago when he described his family reunion, like a "mini-united nations" he said, and he unhesitatingly referred that a brother in law was chinese, i.e. conrad.

conrad and maya met at the university of hawaii in the east-west center when both had received a doctorate, maya majoring in education and conrad majoring in political science. for "southeast asia" they learn each other, because soetoro-Ng was born in jakarta with the indonesian half of the descent, while conrad's parents were ethnic chinese from malaysia. they had lost of topics in southeast asia to talk about.

early march in 2008, when the democratic primary campaign was going on, conrad wrote a letter to asian-american voters, and said:" never before had a presidential candidate like obama knew the asian-american and pacific islander population. i hoped that asian americans and pacific island people from different societies and a candidate who could give the nation real substantial change. it's time for us to deal with all the things in the white house.". asian-american voters have always been full of good impression on hillary. obama's timely introduction of his chinese brother in law received the obvious effect. many ethnic chinese supporting hillary clinton in turn voted for obama. the president of asian pacific american associationg chen guocai expressed his support for obama in early march. he said in a statement:" we are very proud to have maya and conrad as the representative of senator obama."
