[交流] a real American president-----chapter 1

growing up
01----obama, once a lovely naughty boy

when djoemiati sees obama on the television every time, a 66-year-old woman living in the central district of jakarta recalls her memories. sheremembers clearly that the man who is running for the us presidency of the democratic illinois senator is barack obama:" it was barry soetoro who runs like a duck in the field."

barry was obama's name when he spent his childhood in jarkata. when he was 6 years old, he moved with his mother and stepfather lolo soetoro here, being neighborhood to djoemiati, whose 77-year-old husband sold a piece of land to lolo soetoro when they first moved here from papua.

djoemiati immediately recollected the days with barry(obama), who had black complexion, fat body, curly hair and soon got acquainted with children in the village. thouth he could not speak indonesian, it is alright for him to play with every one. he liked every item such as hide-and-seek, baseball, wrestling, shooting and football, among which he favored running best with ugly manner, so villagers all joked that he was like a duck in the field, for he was fat for running.

his stepfather lolo brought some traditional decoration from papua. his former neighbor, the 51-year-old eddy recalled:" when i first came to barry(obama)'s home, i saw the aboriginal lance for the first time."

lolo also brought some living animal such as snakes, lizards, tortoise, monkeys and precious poultry. so barry always showed off in front of other children. in fact, unlike nowdays, few people liked this kind of special animals at that time. their behaviors were treated as fashion. another neighbor was ever angry at barry making him scared by throwing a tortoise onto his face. soon afterwards, all the stepfather's pets disappeared because of a flood. and obama burst into a flood of tears, whcih proved that a child getting constand touch with animals will be more communicative and sympathetic with others according to psychologists.

though all the pets were missing, obama still had many toys. in accordance with a classmate when obama was in primary school, obama had a special pistol toy, which was generously given to his brother, 55-year-old zoni.

"cheating, don't touch me, don't do that are all obama's words on his lips." his teacher in asisi school ever described a pupil in first grade. she said that the newcomer obama manipulated little indonesian words and stammered out indonesian after 4 or 5 months, she also said obama's indonesian marks were only 5 while his arithmetic was indeed excellent, ranking in one of the top 10 students. " this child was so smart, friendly and skilled at communicating with others" she recalled.

the female teacher also remembered that obama often protected weak classmates from being bullied. he would comfort those crying classmates because of falling down. he was the tallest child of the class and liked to lead the class. if the teacher had not arrived, he would not allow other pupils to come in.

in order to impede obama's running for presidency, some american media spared every effort to look for his errors. for example, some people announced that the school obama once enrolled was an islamic school . obama's neighbor denounced:" it differed greatly for asisi was a christian school."
