The sediment analytical tests such as the Shell Hot Filtration Test, IP-375 or S-Value are predictors of stability and compatibility. These tests are usually performed when the heavy oil is initially produced and are used to predict the future sediment-formation due to time/temperature or mixing with other materials. It is important to note that these sediment tests are not actual values of stability or compatibility but have been found to correlate with the stability or compatibility of some products. AXENS data on long-term aging of fuel oil samples in a nitrogen blanket have demonstrated that the sediment measured using an existent IP-375 test are significantly less than that predicted by the potential, IP-375 test which is designated as the IP-390 Test. Most of the filtration type sediment tests involve an existent and a potential test. The existent test is performed immediately after the heavy oil sample is produced. The potential test is a better measure of the long-term stability of the fuel oil and is sometimes called the accelerated aging test. A thermal potential test involves the repeat of the addition of solvent and the filtration after a specified storage time and temperature (typically 100¡ãC for 24 hours).
