I will retire next March, 2013. I will continue to be here one more year
as a part-time professor. I can not accept you for a long period, but
have a small fund left with me, so I may be able to support your short
stay, say for a few months. We can discuss the amount of support and the
period of stay. Please let me know if you are interested in this offer.

I donot agree with above comments. It would be an opportunity to go if he can offer you some interesting project you can work on. Base on his experience, you would expect a good paper from short period of stay.

To be honest, if me, I would start discussing with him about the future work instead of giving up totally.
