I Am Growing Up and Looking Back: Something About Santa Claus
|
|
It is almost Christmas time. Here I want to share with you something about Santa Claus. I don't know how many of you who were born in the 1980s have a similar childhood memory.But...just let me know what you think of it after reading this: I didn't know about "Santa Claus" until school age.Actually when I first saw the picture with Santa Claus carrying his huge red sack, I cringed. In the back of my head I thought that in the red sack which Santa was carrying...there must be a kidnapped child. Why did I think like that? Here is a story. On the way to my kindergarten there was a warehouse. The keeper of the warehouse was an stout old man with a bald head. He looked like a very nice person, because he always greeted people with the biggest smile ever. It seemed there was nothing wrong with him.But there was something wrong... Let me stop right here for a second. And ask you a quick question. Have your parents told you not to talk strangers when you was a little kid? My parents told me that again and again. And my mom added, "Never follow a stranger to some place even when he/she is asking you with a smile on their faces." When my mom told me that, I thought of the warehouse keeper. So I asked, "you mean a smiling old man like the grandpa in the warehouse." My mom chuckled out, "yes, an old man like him might be a kidnapper. And he could caught you and put you in a sack and sell you for good money." ...haha, here you go. In the back of my head: the warehouse keeper = a kidnapper selling little kids for money. With this in my head, everytime I walked past the warehouse with my mom, I freaked out at the sight of the smiling old man. On one occasion when my mom was chit-chatting with him, I almost burst into tears because I was so scared the man would catch me and put me in a sack if my mom was looking the other way to greet somebody else. ...But later I did doubt about the assumption of the man being a kidnapper. Since my parents knew him and his granddaughter was going to the same kindergarten with me,in no way he would want to get me and sell me. Even if he was a bad man who sold kidnapped kids for big money, by that time he would be rich enough to quit his job and move to somewhere else. Anyway, I was too afraid of him and I must say he was my boogeyman. One more thing, it took me quite a long time to stop thinking there was a bad Santa who lured kids into crawling into his big red sack by gifts so he could kidnap them and sell them for money. And then he could buy more gifts as baits. So more innocent children would be his future victims.
