Christel CAUSSERAND. The studentship, fully funded by the BIOART project, is tenable for 3 years and will be available from May 2013. Studentship description The Initial Training Network set-up within the BIOART Project aims at providing state-of-the-art multidisciplinary training for a cohort of 16 young researchers in order to equip them with the skills required to make a significant impact in the treatment of kidney and liver diseases. Within this framework, the early-stage researcher (ESR) at UPS will tackle the challenge of increasing the clearance of middle molecules which otherwise accumulate in the patients bloods to unbearable levels. Commercially available artificial kidneys, then membranes prepared within the project consortium will be used. More precisely, this researcher will focus on the identification of the key operating parameters (membrane structure, membrane chemical composition, hydrodynamics, module design¡) controlling the transfer of medium sized molecules. The UPS-ESR will use a newly designed micro-fluidic chip mimicking the flow conditions in a single kidney hollow fiber. The final deliverable will be the design of a new module and its optimal operating conditions. A number of basic and advanced training events (training courses/summer schools) and four secondments with project partners are planned within the project. The studentship is fully funded by the FP7 BIOART project and includes a gross stipend of €44,000 per year and a budget to cover expanses linked to the mobility within the project. Person Specification Eligible candidates must hold a Master-level Degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Process/Industrial Engineering or closely related field.
