The end day has a long history in the western countries. For christianities, the end day is called Armageddon. In this day, God will end the evail and not rightous people. This is a war between God and Satan. The rightous people will have a perfectly new world after this war. So the christians are actually looking forward for the end day, not worrying about it.
Maya calendar is so widespread, perhaps due to the reason that it gives a specific day. The other regions don't know which day the end day will be.

Prophecies in the Bible talk about the end of the world. '....there shall be famines,and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows....But he taht shall endure unto the endm the same shall be saved....Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall  the sun be darkend， and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken...."
I wonder whether the scene of the end is nearly the prophecies.
