Careful attention is given to the details of the proofs so that the neophyte, who need only be acquainted with a minimum of facts on groups, polynomial rings, homomorphisms and modules, should have no difficulty to follow the lucid presentation of the author. Throughout the text the general theorems are illustrated in the special cases of quadratic and cyclotomic fields; thus the background for more advanced topics such as class field theory and algebraic functions is prepared. Most welcome for the student will be the well-chosen exercises at the end of the volume.
