| Remediation of pesticide-polluted soil is particularly challenging when pesticides in soil are aged and a mixture of pesticides is present. Application of surfactant Tween 80 was investigated to accelerate the degradation of HCHs (¦Á-, ¦Â-, ¦Ã- and ¦Ä-hexachlorocyclohexane) and DDX (p,p¡ä-DDT, o,p¡ä-DDT, p,p¡ä-DDE and p,p¡ä-DDD) in highly contaminated and naturally aged soil under anaerobic conditions. Apparent effect of surfactant Tween80 on the degradation of HCHs and DDX was not observed. Furthermore, desorption experiments results showed surfactant Tween80 had little effect of on the desorption for HCHs and DDX from soil. Some previous studies observed surfactants can facilitate the degradation of HCHs and DDX in water and soil freshly spiked with these pesticides. However, surfactant Tween 80 did not facilitate the degradation of ¦Â-HCH, p,p¡ä-DDT, o,p¡ä-DDT and p,p¡ä-DDE in contaminated site soils. This might be due to the fact that soil used in this experiment was from a former organochlorine pesticides-manufacturing plan, which was polluted more than 20 years. DDX and HCHs in the contaminated site soil might have become less available, due to the fact that soil ageing reduce the desorption of HCHs and DDX. |
