As a general rule, the lettering on the artwork should have a finished, printed size of 7 pt for normal text and no smaller than 6 pt for subscript and superscript characters. Smaller lettering will yield text that is hardly legible. This is a rule-of-thumb rather than a strict rule. There are instances where other factors in the artwork, (for example, tints and shadings,) dictate a finished size of perhaps 10 pt.

The printed tables look best when the size of the individual characters approximately matches that of the typeset text, which is in 10-point font. But because numerals resemble uppercase letters rather than lowercase letters, the overall appearance of numerical tabulations tends to be optimum if the numbers are in 9- or 8-point and the headings in 10- or 9-point font. We therefore recommend the use of a 9-point font for numerical tables in general, and we advise against the use of the 12-point font.
