Reviewer: 2 > Comments to the Author > The manuscript (12-258-F) by et al. describes microbial diversity in response to tillage and residue retention in an eroded Loess soil in China. This study has an interesting and valuable contribution to soil microbial ecology under the conservation agriculture in eroded Loess soils. Description of experimental design and analytical methods was on the whole satisfactory. The results of crop yields, soil chemical properties, and parameters on microbial diversity in soils were explained individually. However the authors did not mention the relationship between each property and soil fertility, and the contribution of microbial diversity on the basis of carbon source utilization by Biolog to crop yields. In spite of the focus on the carbon utilization by soil microorganisms, organic components derived from crop residues in the soils were not analyzed. The results of PCA of carbon source utilization patterns only showed distinguished pattern between residue removal treatments and retention treatments and could not demonstrate the contribution to soil fertility and crop yield.
