With the rapid of economic development in coastal areas, the pressure of population growth, and the contradiction between shortage of the land resources and the space resources become sharper and sharper. Reclamation of the ocean has become an important way to increase lands’ area and space, ease the contradiction between humanity and land. In the Netherlands, almost 7000 km2 of land area was made from ocean reclamation in past 800 years. In many countries such as Japan, Korea, and American, reclamation of the ocean had also quite big promotion effect to the urbanization of coastal regions. In China, take the Pearl River Delta area as an example, where was our experiment sampling points, as much as 600 km2 coastal wetlands have been reclaimed since 1981. However, the coastal tidal flat is also one of the main sinks for heavy metals resulting from adsorption and sedimentation (Williams et al., 1994). On the basis of our prior studies [QuSheng Li, ZhiFeng Wu, et al, 2007; QuSheng Li, Bei Chu, Lei Shi, et al, 2007.], tidal flat soil in Pearl River estuary is contaminated gravely by heavy metals. This bings a health risk because the heavy metals in sediments may enter crops when the tidal flats are reclaimed.......Previous study showed that Pb and Cd in reclaimed tidal flat soils were mainly in exchangeable forms, account for 38.3% and 43.2% of totals respectively. And the contaminated region of soil profile begins at the top of the soil to more than 1 meter depth. Whereas such circumstances, soil leaching can be conducted in situation to reduce the threats from heavy metals. |
