The CMMS will be used to evaluate and optimize inventory-stocking levels, including eliminating dead stock and avoiding expiration of inventory. The process will include provisions for monitoring slow-moving and obsolete stock. Usage history will be monitored through the CMMS and will indicate when a part was last used, where, why, and how many. Criteria are set for classification as a ‘low usage’ part and exception reports highlight parts meeting these criteria. Care has to be taken to ensure that very low usage 0“insurance” parts for critical equipment are not disposed of in error. A useful measure is “idle inventory” value. i.e. parts with no usage in the last 3 years. Inventory assessments should be conducted annually to identify obsolete and redundant items and any excess stock. |
