In recent years, there has been renewed attention to the role of diverse modulatory systems in the flexible regulation of synapses and dynamic tuning of circuits. This issue of Neuron contains a series of Reviews focusing on recent insights into neuromodulatory mechanisms and how they influence neuronal function and behavior. The cover design is by Kate Mahan.
