In this project we chose electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling site as typical polluted region and measured persistent organic pollutants in human blood to explore their health effects. We found that e-waste related pollutants, inlcuding PCBs, lower brominated PBDEs, BB-153, and Dechlorane Plus in blood samples from people working or living in the e-waste site were 2-8 folds higher than in those from a control region. Correspondingly, biomarkers of health effects, including geneic damage, oxidative stress, immune function, and so on, all insinuated a higher health risk especially the risk of tumour for people working or living in the e-waste site. On the other hand, we explored the risk factors of a certain health outcome, i.e., neural tube defects, by measuring persistent organic pollutants including PBDEs, PCBs, PAHs, and pesticides in placentas as indicator of fetus/infant prenatal exposure. We found that when exposed to higher levels of PAHs and some pesticides, the risk of neural tube defects significantly increased with dose-response relationship. These studies provided a preliminary view on the relationship between exposure to pollutants and the health effects, and further research on molecular level is warranted to reveal the mechanism of health effects caused by pollutants. 英文主题词e-waste recycling site,persistent organic pollutants, health effects, risk of tumour, neural tube defects |
