Pt Nanocubes and Their Catalysis for Oxygen Reduction

Synthesis of Pt nanoparticles with controlled sizes and shapes is one of the most attractive goals in developing highly active Pt catalysts for fine chemical synthesis. Studies on oxygen reduction in acid electrolytes show that Pt (100) planes are more active than the (111) ones. Using Pt nanocubes as catalyst, one would expect that less Pt is needed in the fuel cell reactionsa goal that has long been sought for commercialization of the fuel cell technology. Here a simple high-temperature organic phase synthesis of monodisperse Pt nanocubes was reported and their catalysis for oxygen reduction in a fuel cell reaction condition was studied. Pt nanocubes were synthesized by reduction of platinum acetylacetonate, Pt(acac)2, in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine and a trace amount of Fe(CO)5. Selfassembly of these nanocubes gave a (100) textured array, indicating a very narrow shape distribution in cubic Pt nanoparticles. Electrochemical studies showed that the Pt nanocubes catalyzed oxygen reduction in a 1.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solution with specific activity over 2-fold higher than that from the commercial Pt catalyst. One interesting thing for the synthesis is, spherical or polyhedran shaped NPs were obtained when either more Fe(CO)5 or no Fe(CO)5 was added under current conditions. This makes it hard to explain the growth mechanism. Also, more and more interest has been attracted by the research on fuel cell, especially the oxygen reduction catalyzed by Pt at the cathode. I had saw a lot of reports recently in large conferences, such as APS, MRS and ECS. Fuel cell, in addition to other research fields related to developing clean and novel substitute energy strategies are now really hot in US. Experiences obtained For a paper, the most important point is the idea. As for this paper about Pt nanocubes, there are already several publications (including Science and JACS) talking about the synthesis and growth mechanism, but nobody has related this shape control to the catalysis for fuel cell. Fuel cell, however, as a technology regarded as the possible alternative for the next generation of power supplying method, is really hot in research recently. Several science papers has been published focused on improving the Pt catalyst used for oxygen reduction at the cathode. |
