The U.S. Maritime Liaison Office in Bahrain says that, although ships belonging to U.S.-led anti-terror coalition are operating in the area, they cannot monitor every ship that passes the east coast of Somalia. The office is urging merchant ships to stay at least 200 nautical miles off Somalia. Pirates have attacked at least eight ships in the area this year. On Saturday, pirates tried but failed to hijack a boat carrying food to Somalia for the United Nations World Food Program. The Japanese officials say the three countries will be exploring possible scenarios involving North Korean ballistic missile attacks and Chinese missiles that could reach Australia or the U.S. territory of Guam. Japanese and Australian defense officials have refused to comment on the report. The newspaper says the three countries will hold a meeting before the end of the year to discuss the proposed missile defense shield. In 1998, North Korea launched a missile that flew over Japan and landed in the sea. It conducted a nuclear test last year. |
