Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) have come to be called ‘‘supercapacitors,’’
‘‘ultracapacitors,’’ and ‘‘power capacitors’’ depending on its charge mechanism
or active electrode material used for construction. The expression
‘‘supercapacitor’’ was originally coined by Nippon Electric Company (NEC),
who first successfully marketed the device as SuperCapacitor™, made from
carbon material, while ‘‘ultracapacitor’’ stems from devices designed for use
by the U.S. military using ruthenium and tantalum oxides. A clear term
has yet to be defined in either research or industry; regardless, the term
‘‘electrochemical supercapacitor’’ will be used in this text to describe all materials
that store energy by means of capacitance. Electrochemical supercapacitors
use two distinctly different charge mechanisms to develop capacitance: electric
double-layer capacitance through an electrostatic charge development between
the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, and pseudocapacitance developed from highly
reversible Faradaic reactions processes occurring at specific potentials [1–4].
The resulting capacitors are called electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC) and
pseudo-capacitors.
