how you read a paper

I am a student now and I have to publish at least one paper for graduation. Therefore, I have to do many experiments to fulfill the requirement. My seniors always tell me that one way to get a good idea for own experiments is reading related papers as many as possible. Summer holiday is coming and I think I will have much more free time to read papers. What confused me now is I found it is difficult to read a paper effectively. I hope everyone passing here can give your experiences. One reason that I hate reading is that I found I can not remember the main contents easily. I can not focus on the main standpoints, and therefore though I spent long time for reading, it is still difficult for me to conclude the critical discovery of the paper. Because of this obstacle, I become to think that there is no need to read many papers. Anyway, I can not get any inspiration. The second one, is that, I always can not concentrate on reading. I can spend the whole afternoon to surf on the internet, but I cannot bear sitting seriously and reading a paper concentrated, even just one hour. How can I overcome this defect? |

Reading paper is a very boring thing for me, but I must do it. And I must do it seriously, because if you dont pay any patient on it, you will get nothing, so sometimes I must print it and take it to a quiet room. Then I will get what I want from the papers. hehe, this is only my ways, I dont know if it adapt to you? Good luck! |

What a good question! Actually, in my opinion, it is one of the most critical issues we must handle very serious during our researches. We must read papers by heart; otherwise, we are easily lost in our research and have no idea what others are doing. Sometimes, we'll get some good ideas from reading. And lots of people spend quit a lot of time reading papers, that's quit necessary. To read papers with more efficiency, I have some suggestions for you 1) Some software will help you a lot For example, endnote is very useful for you to arrange your papers. You can arrange them by authors, or publish titles. it will be much convenient for you to access your papers. 2) Find papers about the same topic and compare them It is quit necessary to arrange your papers by some key words. To compare different work, not only you'll remember them more clearly, but also you'll get a full picture about this topic. For better comparison, drawing some graphs or making tablet with excels are quit necessary. After detailed comparison, you'll be aware of deficiencies and merits of this work. 3) Doing some paper work and discussion are helpful Reading is not enough. You should writing something for discussion with your supervisor or co-researchers. And discussion with others is also beneficial. Everyone has his unique understanding style of the same problem. Try to read from the view of others and you might get some new ideas. 4) Re-search the most important journals regularly and re-arrange your endnote Find some excellent paper from the most cited journals of your field and enlarge your paper library regularly.
