The studentship covers both the full tuition fees (approximately ¡ê15,000/per year) and the living expenses of ¡ê10,000/per year for three years. The expected starting date is 17th of September 2012. The student will work on a research project titled ¡°Aerodynamic performance enhancement of impellers using surface texturing¡± under the direction of Dr Shan Zhong. Surface roughness is known to affect the performance of aerodynamic bodies by promoting the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, with a typical example being the dimples purposely made on goal balls. In this project, a series of aerodynamic experiments will be undertaken to investigate how surface textures produced using advanced laser manufacturing techniques can be employed to achieve a definite improvement in efficiency and a reduction in noise of small impellers, and to provide an insight of the physical mechanisms involved. A range of experimental measurement facilities will be available for the investigation, including PIV, LDA, pressure transducers and hot-wire anemometer. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with a leading industrial company, offering a unique opportunity of transferring research findings into innovative engineering designs. The University of Manchester ranks 29th in the QS World University Rankings and 6th in Europe. It is the largest single-site university in the UK. One of the most famous fluid mechanists, Osborne Reynolds, made many of his ground-breaking discoveries while he was a professor of engineering here.
