Specific surface area is the sum of the surface areas of all the particles in 1 gram of the material. It indicates the particle size of powder materials. Indices of pore structure includes pore volume and pore size distribution, and the pore volume determines the maximum adsorptive capacity. Many of the physical and chemical properties are dependant on the specific surface area and pore structure. As tiny carbon particles with huge specific surface area, excellent catalystic activity, and good chemical stability, activated carbon is widely applied as adsrobent and catalystic carrier. It is of great importance for understanding the adsorption behavior of activated carbon to investigate the specific surface area and pore structure.
In the present study, the method of nitrogen adsorption was employed to test the activated carbon samples for the specific surface area, pore volume and average pore size. The influence of the temperature and duration of out-gassing to the tests was also investigated. Results suggested that it was the optimal treatment when the samples were out-gassed under 300oC for 3h. To obtain the most reliable value, a sample weight of around 0.1600g was selected, when the total surface area was in the range of 110-113 m2. When tested by multi-point determination, the more the points applied, the more acurate the result would be. In order to enhance the test efficiency, a 4-point determination was selected, and the coeffeicient of variance met the requirement of the test. For single-point determination, the coeffeicient of variance was less than 5%. As a simple and rapid determination, it could meet the basic test requirement. |
