INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD The role of the International Advisory Board (IAB), which will meet annually as part of the bi-annual workshop in Dalian or Summer School in Santa Barbara, will be to (i) assess and critique the strength of the international quality of the collaborations, (ii) assist in the further development of the partnership's international character, and (iii) assist in expanding the partnership to other Asian scientific institutions. The members of the IAB are: Yuen (Ron) Shen (Chair), Professor of Physics, University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Shen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, a Foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academia Sinica; a Fellow of the American Physical Society and Optical Society of America. He has received numerous awards including Sloan Fellow and Guggenheim Fellowships, an Alexander von Humboldt Award, the C.H. Townes Award, the A.L. Schawlow Prize, the Max Planck Research Prize, the F. Isakson Prize and the Dept. of Energy Award for Outstanding Scientific Accomplishments in Solid State Physics. He is interested in the basic understanding of light interaction with matter as well as development and applications of modern optical techniques to the study of interfaces. Jens Norskov Director of the Center for Atomic-scale Materials Physics, Dr. Norskov received his Ph.D in Theoretical Physics from the University of Aarhus. He post-doc'd at IBM in Yorktown Heights and returned to his homeland where he is now Professor of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark. He has made essential contributions in theoretical surface science, nanostructures and materials properties, heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry and fuel cells and in the development of theoretical methods. Masatake Haruta: Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Masatake Haruta graduated from Nagoya Institute of Technology with a major in Industrial chemistry in 1970. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Chemistry at Kyoto University in 1976. His work there was concerned with electrochemistry in hydrogen fluoride solvent. In 1976 he was employed as a research scientist by Osaka National Research Institute(ONRI) and was involved in the catalytic combustion of hydrogen. He studied catalyst preparation through colloid chemistry under Professor Bernard Delmon's guidance in Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium in 1981-1982. Since he came back to ONRI, he has been studying the catalysis of gold nanoparticles. In 1994 he was promoted to Head of Catalysis Section, a Science Fellow and Head of Interdisciplinary Basic Research Laboratory. He became Director of the Department of Energy and the Environment in 1999. On the occasion of the transformation of national research Institutes into semi-autonomous bodies in 2001, he moved to Tsukuba as Director of Research Institute for Green Technology, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology(AIST). In 2005 he joined the faculty members of Urban Environmental Sciences, Tokyo Metropolitan University. During his carrier in AIST, he was a guest professor at the Technical University of Vienna in 1994. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Osaka University since 1996 till 2005. Professor Haruta pioneered a novel field of heterogeneous catalysis by the discovery of unique catalytic performance of gold nanoparticles deposited on transition metal oxides. He received Osaka Science Prize, Science Award from the Catalysis Society of Japan, and Henry J. Albert Award from the International Precious Metals Institute. Daniel J. Auerbach Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Dr. Auerbach received a PhD degree in physics from the University of Chicago. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, The Institute of Physics (UK), and the AVS. Auerbach is perhaps best known as a pioneer of the application of molecular-beam and laser-spectroscopic techniques to understanding of the microscopic details of chemical dynamics at surfaces. His research interests also include information storage systems, the design of parallel computers, and chemical dynamics. Auerbach, is currently a senior manager at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies with responsibilities for research in hard disk drive architecture and systems. Before joining Hitachi, he work at IBM where he served as Head of Physical Sciences Department at the Almaden Research Center and on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University. Chun-Li Bai Insitute of Chemistry, CAS, Beijing China, Professor Chunli Bai is Executive Vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and President of Chinese Chemical Society, He is a member of CAS, a fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, a member of Bureau and Executive Committee of The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). He has also served as the chief scientist for the China National Steering Committee for Nanoscience and Related Technology and as the Director of the China National Center for Nanoscience and technology.
